Your Complete Guide to Driving in Western Australia

1Getting Your Learner Licence

The first step in your driving journey in Western Australia is obtaining your learner licence. To be eligible, you must be at least 16 years old and provide acceptable proof of identity. You will need to visit a service centre run by Department of Transport WA to submit your application.

Before receiving your learner licence, you must pass the Theory Test. This is a multiple-choice test consisting of 30 questions covering road rules, traffic signs, and safe driving practices. You need to get at least 24 questions correct to pass. The current pass rate is around 88%, but we strongly recommend practising beforehand.

You will also need to pass an eyesight test. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them with you. Your learner licence will note that corrective lenses are required while driving.

2Completing Your Logbook Hours

In Western Australia, learner drivers must complete a minimum of 50 hours of supervised driving practice. This must include at least 5 hours of night driving. Each hour must be recorded in an official logbook and signed by your supervising driver.

Your supervising driver must hold a full (unrestricted) licence and must sit in the front passenger seat at all times while you are driving. They must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

We recommend spreading your practice across different conditions: wet weather, heavy traffic, suburban streets, highways, and rural roads. The more diverse your experience, the safer and more confident you will be when it comes to your driving test.

3Speed Limits and Restrictions

Understanding the speed limits that apply to you at each licence stage is essential. In Western Australia:

LLearner100 km/h max
P1Provisional 1100 km/h max
P2Provisional 2100 km/h max

Blood alcohol: A zero blood alcohol concentration (0.00 BAC) applies to all learner and provisional drivers.

Passengers: Under 25: No more passengers than seatbelts between midnight and 5am for first 6 months

Mobile phones: No mobile phone use for learner and provisional drivers

4Provisional Licence Stages

After passing your practical driving test, you will move through the following provisional licence stages in Western Australia:

P1
Provisional — 24 months (with no restrictions from 19)

Display red P-plates at all times. Restrictions on passengers, speed, and mobile phone use apply.

After successfully completing all provisional stages (approximately 2 years total from your learner licence), you will be eligible for a full, unrestricted driver licence.
