Important: You still need to complete at least 90 hours of supervised practice driving with a fully licensed driver (such as a parent or guardian). Your Complete Guide to Driving in New South Wales

1Getting Your Learner Licence

The first step in your driving journey in New South Wales is obtaining your learner licence. To be eligible, you must be at least 16 years old and provide acceptable proof of identity. You will need to visit a service centre run by Transport for NSW to submit your application.

Before receiving your learner licence, you must pass the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT). This is a multiple-choice test consisting of 45 questions covering road rules, traffic signs, and safe driving practices. You need to get at least 42 questions correct to pass. The current pass rate is around 95%, but we strongly recommend practising beforehand.

You will also need to pass an eyesight test. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them with you. Your learner licence will note that corrective lenses are required while driving.

2Completing Your Logbook Hours

In New South Wales, learner drivers must complete a minimum of 120 hours of supervised driving practice. This must include at least 20 hours of night driving. Each hour must be recorded in an official logbook and signed by your supervising driver.

Your supervising driver must hold a full (unrestricted) licence and must sit in the front passenger seat at all times while you are driving. They must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Take advantage of the 3-for-1 bonus scheme by booking lessons with a professional driving instructor. Each hour of professional tuition counts as 3 hours in your logbook, up to a maximum of 30 bonus hours. This can significantly reduce the total time you need to spend practising.

We recommend spreading your practice across different conditions: wet weather, heavy traffic, suburban streets, highways, and rural roads. The more diverse your experience, the safer and more confident you will be when it comes to your driving test.

3Speed Limits and Restrictions

Understanding the speed limits that apply to you at each licence stage is essential. In New South Wales:

LLearner90 km/h max
P1Provisional 190 km/h max
P2Provisional 2100 km/h max

Blood alcohol: A zero blood alcohol concentration (0.00 BAC) applies to all learner and provisional drivers.

Passengers: P1: Only 1 passenger under 21 between 11pm-5am

Mobile phones: No mobile use at all — even hands-free — for L and P1 drivers

4Provisional Licence Stages

After passing your practical driving test, you will move through the following provisional licence stages in New South Wales:

P1
P1 (Red P-Plates) — 12 months

Display red P-plates at all times. Restrictions on passengers, speed, and mobile phone use apply.

P2
P2 (Green P-Plates) — 24 months

Display green P-plates. Some restrictions are relaxed, but mobile phone restrictions may still apply.

After successfully completing all provisional stages (approximately 4 years total from your learner licence), you will be eligible for a full, unrestricted driver licence.

NSW Learner Driver FAQs

You need a minimum of 120 hours of supervised driving, including at least 20 hours of night driving. These hours must be recorded in your log book and verified by your supervising driver. The 3-for-1 bonus scheme means every hour with a professional instructor counts as three hours, up to a maximum of 30 bonus hours (10 professional lessons).
The DKT has a pass rate of approximately 95%. You need to answer 42 out of 45 questions correctly. The test covers road rules, traffic signs, and safe driving practices. You can take practice tests online through the Transport for NSW website before booking your official test.
Yes, learner drivers in NSW can drive on motorways and freeways, provided they are accompanied by a fully licensed supervising driver. The speed limit for learner drivers is 90 km/h, so you must stay in the left lane on roads with speed limits above 90 km/h.
When you take a driving lesson with a qualified driving instructor (not a family member or friend), each hour counts as three hours in your logbook. You can claim up to 30 bonus hours this way — meaning 10 hours of professional lessons equals 30 logbook hours. This is a great way to fast-track your 120 hours while learning from an expert.
If you fail your driving test in NSW, you can rebook after a waiting period. There is no limit on the number of attempts, but you will need to pay the test fee again each time. Your examiner will provide feedback on the areas you need to improve. Many learners benefit from booking a few more lessons focused on the areas they struggled with before retesting.
