1Getting Your Learner Licence
The first step in your driving journey in South Australia is obtaining your learner licence. To be eligible, you must be at least 16 years old and provide acceptable proof of identity. You will need to visit a service centre run by Department for Infrastructure and Transport SA to submit your application.
Before receiving your learner licence, you must pass the Theory Test. This is a multiple-choice test consisting of 50 questions covering road rules, traffic signs, and safe driving practices. You need to get at least 43 questions correct to pass. The current pass rate is around 89%, but we strongly recommend practising beforehand.
You will also need to pass an eyesight test. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them with you. Your learner licence will note that corrective lenses are required while driving.
2Completing Your Logbook Hours
In South Australia, learner drivers must complete a minimum of 75 hours of supervised driving practice. This must include at least 15 hours of night driving. Each hour must be recorded in an official logbook and signed by your supervising driver.
Your supervising driver must hold a full (unrestricted) licence and must sit in the front passenger seat at all times while you are driving. They must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
