1Getting Your Learner Licence
The first step in your driving journey in Queensland is obtaining your learner licence. To be eligible, you must be at least 16 years old and provide acceptable proof of identity. You will need to visit a service centre run by Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads to submit your application.
Before receiving your learner licence, you must pass the Road Rules Knowledge Test. This is a multiple-choice test consisting of 30 questions covering road rules, traffic signs, and safe driving practices. You need to get at least 26 questions correct to pass. The current pass rate is around 92%, but we strongly recommend practising beforehand.
You will also need to pass an eyesight test. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them with you. Your learner licence will note that corrective lenses are required while driving.
2Completing Your Logbook Hours
In Queensland, learner drivers must complete a minimum of 100 hours of supervised driving practice. This must include at least 10 hours of night driving. Each hour must be recorded in an official logbook and signed by your supervising driver.
Your supervising driver must hold a full (unrestricted) licence and must sit in the front passenger seat at all times while you are driving. They must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

3Speed Limits and Restrictions
Understanding the speed limits that apply to you at each licence stage is essential. In Queensland:
Blood alcohol: A zero blood alcohol concentration (0.00 BAC) applies to all learner and provisional drivers.
Passengers: P1: Only 1 passenger under 21 between 11pm-5am
Mobile phones: No mobile phone use — including hands-free — for L and P1 drivers
4Provisional Licence Stages
After passing your practical driving test, you will move through the following provisional licence stages in Queensland:
Display red P-plates at all times. Restrictions on passengers, speed, and mobile phone use apply.
Display green P-plates. Some restrictions are relaxed, but mobile phone restrictions may still apply.
After successfully completing all provisional stages (approximately 3 years total from your learner licence), you will be eligible for a full, unrestricted driver licence.
