Speed compliance through the 40 km/h Box Hill Mall zone on Station Street is strictly monitored — the pedestrian density is very high and any speed exceedance is treated as a critical safety error.

Routes often include the residential streets of Mont Albert for three-point turns and kerbside stops, where the moderate hills and parked cars require careful judgement. Parallel parking is tested on the streets around Box Hill Gardens, where spaces are standard-sized but the narrow roads mean you need good spatial awareness. The school zone on Albion Road is tested during active hours.

Observation at intersections is closely watched — Victorian examiners expect clear head checks before every turn and lane change, and a check over your shoulder before moving off from the kerb. Speed management through the transition from the 40 km/h CBD to the 60 km/h arterial on Whitehorse Road is another common fail area.

The Box Hill VicRoads licence testing centre is at 1 Ellingworth Parade, Box Hill VIC 3128, approximately 400 metres from Box Hill Central shopping centre and the station. In Victoria, you need to bring your current learner permit, proof of identity, and the booking confirmation for your driving test. Unlike NSW, Victoria does not require a physical logbook — but you must have completed a minimum of 120 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night) if you are under 21.

The vehicle must have current registration, L-plates displayed, and be in roadworthy condition. There is metered street parking on Ellingworth Parade and limited spaces in nearby streets. Box Hill Central car park is a walkable backup.

The tram interaction on Whitehorse Road, the busy Station Street intersections, and the frequent pedestrian crossings demand full attention on observation and road awareness rather than gear management. The gentle hills in Mont Albert and Surrey Hills are not steep enough to provide any meaningful advantage to learning manual.

About 80 per cent of driving lessons booked in the Box Hill area are for automatic vehicles. If you choose manual, be aware that the additional workload of clutch control combined with tram awareness and hook turn execution makes the test notably more challenging.
