Expert tips from instructors who have helped thousands of learners pass. From mock tests to managing nerves, here is everything you need to know.

1Master the Basics First

Before you even think about booking your test, make sure you have nailed the fundamentals. This means smooth gear changes (if manual), confident mirror checks, and solid lane positioning. Your instructor should confirm you are test-ready — not just "nearly there." Many learners rush to book their test before they have truly mastered the basics, and this is the number one reason for first-attempt failures.

Spend extra time on the manoeuvres that examiners love to test: parallel parking, three-point turns, and reversing around a corner. Practice these in different locations and conditions until they feel automatic.

2Do Not Skip Mock Tests

A mock driving test with your instructor is the closest thing to the real deal. It puts you under simulated exam conditions so you can identify weak spots before they cost you.

Ask your instructor to run at least two full mock tests on the actual test routes from your local centre. This removes the surprise factor and lets you focus purely on driving well. Many 1Stop instructors include mock tests as part of their lesson packages — check their profile to see if this is included.

3Know Your Test Routes

Every test centre has a set of routes that examiners use. While you will not know which exact route you will get, practising all of them gives you a massive advantage.

Pay special attention to the tricky sections: busy roundabouts, school zones with variable speed limits, and intersections where visibility is limited. Your instructor will know exactly which spots catch learners out — listen to them.

You can also check 1Stop's Test Route Guide for detailed breakdowns of routes at popular test centres across Australia.

4Manage Your Nerves

Test-day nerves are completely normal. Even the best drivers feel them. The key is not to eliminate nerves but to manage them.

Get a full night's sleep before your test. Eat a light, balanced meal. Arrive at the test centre at least 15 minutes early so you are not rushing. Take slow, deep breaths before you start.

Remember: the examiner is not trying to trick you or catch you out. They simply want to see that you can drive safely and independently. Drive the way your instructor taught you, and you will be fine.

5Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most common reasons learners fail their driving test are not dramatic errors — they are small, avoidable mistakes:

Your instructor will have seen all of these. Ask them specifically which mistakes they see most often and work on eliminating them from your driving.

6Book a Lesson Right Before Your Test

One of the best things you can do is book a 1-hour lesson immediately before your test. Your instructor can warm you up, run through the test routes one last time, and drop you at the test centre in a calm, confident state.

Many 1Stop instructors also let you use their dual-control car for the test itself, which means you are driving a vehicle you know and trust. Check with your instructor when you book.
